Architect’s sketch of proposed new VMC building at
511 N. Broadway.
The Volunteer Ministry Center is currently housed in a decrepit building on the corner of Gay Street and Jackson Avenue. More than 100 years old, the structure is in constant need of repairs which drain an already tiny operating budget. Space for programs is limited. The clinic is housed off-site.
The VMC has launched a capital campaign to build a new building at 511 North Broadway on property acquired through a grant from Knox County. The new facility will more than double the Center’s existing space, providing much-needed room for expanded programs and services.
The Self-Sufficiency Program, aimed at helping motivated individuals out of homelessness, will be able to accommodate more people. The Refuge will have two more interview rooms.
A multi-purpose room will allow guests to gather for meetings and services. This area will also be used for serving the meals provided by volunteers and will house a “training kitchen” to teach cooking to new apartment dwellers.
The Clinic, currently housed off-site in cramped quarters, will be located in the primary building with improved facilities and expanded exam rooms and treatment areas.
In addition to increased space, the new building will consolidate homeless services in one area, making it more likely that homeless people will access them. It will eliminate the current foot traffic as people walk to the downtown area for day services.
